SynthID Bio brings watermarking to synthetic biology

What happened

Introduced on September 30, 2026, SynthID Bio extends watermarking into synthetic biology. It adjusts a small section of the diffusion network in AlphaFold 3 and is built into a SynthID Bio-enabled ProteinMPNN as well as Evo 2. The methods paper, code, in vitro data, and model weights are open to the research community, and anyone wanting a high-level proposal can request access by emailing synthidbio@google.com.

Why it matters

Scientists working with these protein and genomic design systems can now watermark what they produce. According to the announcement, the marking gently steers choices of amino acids and atomic coordinates. The announcement also reports that watermarked designs performed on par with unmarked ones in terms of hit rate, binding strength, and natural diversity of sequences.
