GitHub MCP server

The GitHub MCP server lets an AI assistant read and act on GitHub resources such as repositories, issues, pull requests, Actions, and gists.

What the GitHub MCP server does

The server exposes groups of GitHub API capabilities that can be turned on or off with the --toolsets flag, so you control which tools an AI assistant can use. Available tools cover areas such as GitHub Actions workflows and logs, code scanning and Dependabot alerts, discussions, gists, teams, and repository rulesets. It can be reached as a remote server at api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/, where a host application signs in with OAuth or a GitHub Personal Access Token.

What you need

In the github documentation's own words:

  • “Using OAuth Using a GitHub PAT”
  • “Any host application that supports remote MCP servers should support the remote GitHub server with PAT authentication”
  • “You can still authenticate with a GitHub Personal Access Token (https://github.com/settings/personal-access-tokens/new) by setting GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN instead”
  • “Make sure you're using VS Code 1.101 (https://code.visualstudio.com/updates/v1_101) or later”
  • “Each MCP host application needs to configure a GitHub App or OAuth App to support remote access via OAuth”

Commands and settings change between versions. Check the official instructions before you install.
